Hi
I took my gmat 2 days ago
I got a 720
My work experience is in family business (3 years), where my most significant contribution is making a vertical integration of moving from trading to staring a manufacturing plant. I have be over heading the shop floor production there. My educational background is Mechanical Engineering (8.7 CGPA). I have done 4 months internship at a consulting startup and have been a volunteer for the district municipality during the covid pandemic.
Do i have a shot at ISB ?
Should I retake GMAT?

Is there anything that i could do to improve my chances?

Hi Danush649
Yes of course you have a shot! Think through the contributions you made to your family business and focus on key success metrics that you led single-handedly. Applicants who have experience in scaling a family business can bring unique perspectives in that they have experienced firsthand, the implications of decision-making with specific goals in mind. As the new generation in the family business, you could also present your case with examples, citing your fresh and unconventional approach to doing business (in contrast to traditional norms followed by senior management in family business) as your motivation for pursuing PGP at this point. The experience of working in a family business brings immense learning and challenges that if showcased aptly in your application, would make you a strong contender.

Leading shop floor in a new business setup that you helped establish sounds very promising. Demonstrating a solid industry focus (with pragmatic goals and deep research) can help you further differentiate yourself as an applicant.

What's the breakup of 720 into Q and V? If the Q is 50-51 , I suggest you rather focus on the applications.

Feel free to reach out should you want a candid discussion regarding your applications.

Hi Danush649

Below is our evaluation of your profile.

GMAT: Average ; while there is a conception that more the merrier but your current score is good enough for ISB

Academics: Average

Work Experience: The quantum of experience is average as per ISB's applicant pool is concerned. Family Business experience is always a tricky one since its difficult to justify organic leadership endeavors. Hence you will have to explicitly call out your growth story in the business. Assuming the business is a 2nd / 3rd generation business, you should share stories of your contribution in the application from one or more of the following angles - scaling, digitization, horizontal/vertical expansion, process setting etc. You should also showcase how you have developed an owner’s mindset, not an employee’s mindset.

Extra curricular: You have mentioned a consulting gig. Was it a paid one? Why didn't your pursue this career track? Also, for which industry did you consult? You should be able to show some correlation between your past experience or future career goals with this short term assignment.

Goals: Would be interesting to understand whether you want to rejoin the family business post ISB or pursue a different career?

https://www.crackadmission.com/getting- ... ackground/ - this blog should give you some more insights around how to impeccably craft your application.

I am an ISB alum, CO15, and have been guiding applicants in their journey to get into global business schools. Feel free to reach out in case you seek professional guidance.

Cheers and all the very Best!!

Hello,

Your GMAT is fine. You should now focus on the story. Family business is a great place to learn, experiment and explore decision making. You can actually do things that may take years in a corporate environment. As a next step, evaluate your goals - What do you want to do? Go back to the family business or do you want to spin-off something new? Or is it something else altogether? This clarity is going to be very important for your application.

In case you have any doubts feel free to register for the ISB adcom chat scheduled on Saturday at: https://www.goalisb.com/event-details/i ... ssion-2024 . We hope that it will add further value to your preparation.

All the best!
